Korean equipment supplier strengthens role in global AI chip supply chain as Micron opens $2.75B plant in Gujarat.

Hanmi Semiconductor participated in the inauguration of Micron Technology’s first semiconductor assembly and packaging facility in India, underlining the Korean company’s expanding role in the global artificial intelligence chip supply chain.

The company confirmed it was invited to the opening ceremony as a major equipment supplier at Micron’s new plant in Sanand, Gujarat. The event was attended by Narendra Modi, along with senior government officials and executives from Micron.

The Sanand facility represents an investment of around $2.75 billion and is designed to function as an advanced packaging and testing hub for high-performance memory products used in artificial intelligence systems. Spanning roughly 500,000 square feet, the plant includes one of the largest single-floor cleanroom spaces globally.

The project forms part of India’s broader effort to establish a domestic semiconductor ecosystem through the **Semicon India programme. Financial support includes subsidies covering about 50% of the project cost from the central government, with an additional 20% contribution from the Gujarat state government.

Once fully operational, the facility will focus on testing and packaging advanced memory products such as graphics DRAM and enterprise solid-state drives used in data centres and AI infrastructure. Production is expected to expand from tens of millions of chips annually to hundreds of millions in the coming years.

Hanmi Semiconductor, which received Micron’s Top Supplier recognition last year, plans to further strengthen its partnership by providing on-site technical support. The company intends to deploy engineers to India to assist with equipment installation, operational training, and ongoing technical services.

According to Hanmi, its presence at the opening ceremony highlights its position as a strategic partner within the global semiconductor supply chain and reflects its commitment to supporting Micron’s expanding operations in India.
