Qualcomm is reportedly preparing a new naming structure for its upcoming flagship smartphone processors, with the company potentially adding an ‘Extreme’ designation to its most powerful mobile chip.
According to recent leaks, Qualcomm could introduce two flagship platforms under the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family. The standard processor is expected to retain the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 name, while a more powerful variant could be launched as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Qualcomm has not yet officially confirmed the branding.
For several months, reports have suggested that Qualcomm's top-tier mobile processor could carry a ‘Pro’ suffix. However, information attributed to Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station indicates that Qualcomm may instead use the Extreme branding.
The higher-end platform, reportedly identified as SM8975, could become the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, while the SM8950 is expected to serve as the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6.
The proposed naming would bring Qualcomm's smartphone portfolio closer to its laptop processor strategy, where the company has already used the Elite Extreme branding for its Snapdragon X2 platform.
Both processors are reportedly being developed using TSMC's 2nm N2P process technology. If the information proves accurate, these would represent Qualcomm's first smartphone platforms based on the new manufacturing process.
The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is rumoured to feature a 2+3+3 Oryon CPU configuration, alongside an Adreno 845 GPU, 12MB of graphics memory and LPDDR5X memory support.
The Extreme variant is expected to offer higher performance, potentially featuring an Adreno 850 GPU, 18MB of graphics memory and dedicated AI acceleration capabilities. It is also rumoured to support the newer LPDDR6 memory standard.
The naming reports come as engineering samples of the SM8975 platform have reportedly surfaced, suggesting that Qualcomm is already testing its next-generation flagship silicon.
However, both the specifications and product names remain subject to change before the official launch. Qualcomm has yet to confirm the reported processor configurations, branding or final product range.
Qualcomm is expected to unveil its next-generation flagship smartphone platforms at the Snapdragon Summit, scheduled to take place in Maui from 22 to 24 September.
If the latest reports are accurate, Qualcomm's upcoming flagship range could consist of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the higher-performance Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
While the additional Extreme branding could help distinguish the premium processor, the growing combination of numbers and performance labels may make Qualcomm's mobile chip portfolio more difficult for consumers to navigate. The actual performance, AI capabilities and efficiency differences between the two platforms are likely to be more significant than the names themselves.
