Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates India's third semiconductor manufacturing plant in Sanand, expanding chip packaging and testing capabilities while advancing the India Semiconductor Mission and strengthening the country's role in the global semiconductor supply chain.

India has strengthened its position in the global semiconductor landscape with the inauguration of CG Semi's Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, the country's third semiconductor manufacturing plant. The facility was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of India's broader strategy to build a resilient, self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem.
The new plant is expected to accelerate India's transition from a major electronics consumer to a strategic semiconductor manufacturing hub. The investment expands domestic chip packaging and testing capabilities while supporting sectors including consumer electronics, automotive, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, industrial automation and defence.
The launch comes amid rapid momentum under the India Semiconductor Mission, which has attracted significant public and private investment into fabrication, assembly, packaging, chip design and supporting infrastructure. The government's next phase, India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, aims to deepen domestic capabilities in semiconductor materials, equipment, intellectual property and advanced manufacturing while strengthening supply chain resilience.
Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi reiterated the government's commitment to making India a trusted global destination for semiconductor manufacturing and advanced electronics, highlighting the country's growing manufacturing base and skilled workforce.
Industry observers view the Sanand facility as another important step towards positioning India as a competitive partner in the global semiconductor value chain, particularly as governments and technology companies diversify supply chains and expand regional manufacturing capacity.
